What to Write on a Headstone: Inscription Ideas and Examples

Writing a headstone inscription is one of the hardest short pieces of writing most people will ever do. A few lines have to carry a whole life. This guide walks you through the structure of a traditional inscription, gives you real epitaph examples you are welcome to use or adapt, and explains the practical limits of space, size and cost.

The structure of a headstone inscription

Most Australian inscriptions follow a simple pattern, and it works because it reads naturally from top to bottom.

How many words fit on a headstone?

It depends on the size of the memorial and the size of the lettering. Lettering needs to be large enough to read at a respectful distance, which usually means somewhere between 20mm and 50mm tall. As a rough rule, a standard lawn plaque comfortably carries 30 to 60 words, while a full headstone can carry more. Laser etching gives you more flexibility than traditional engraving, because fine detail stays crisp at smaller sizes.

Does a longer inscription cost more?

With traditional hand engraving, yes, engravers often charge per letter. With our laser-etched black granite memorials the inscription is part of the design, so you can refine your wording as much as you like inside the Design Your Own tool and watch the price as you go. The tool also lets you position every line exactly where you want it, try different fonts, and share the design with your family before you decide anything.

Languages, fonts and symbols

Inscriptions do not have to be in English. We regularly produce memorials with inscriptions in the family’s own language, alongside religious symbols, cultural artwork and personal motifs. Laser etching reproduces scripts and artwork faithfully, including detailed designs such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artwork prepared with the family.

A gentle tip before you decide

Read the inscription aloud. If it sounds like the person, it is right. If it sounds like a form, keep going. And check your cemetery’s rules before finalising, because some sections limit the wording, lettering size or layout. We check compliance on every order and send you a proof to approve before production begins.

Start your design online, try your words on the actual memorial, and take all the time you need.
